Ride will be canceled if there are no registrations by 8:30 PM Friday June 2nd.
A figure 8 route
from Highland Park to the Allegheny Astronomical Observatory at Riverview Park and back.
This ride includes park roads, city streets and paved trails. Suitable for many levels: as a "recovery" ride for more advanced riders (also with the option of a good climb), and as an opportunity to improve condition and skills for newer riders.
Traffic on the city streets included on this route is very low on Sunday mornings, so this will be a relaxing ride despite the urban venue. The halfway stop is at the Allegheny Observatory, with great views.
Note that there are two options
for the climb to the observatory: a more challenging one by continuing slight left on Mairdale Ave at the intersection with Riverview Drive (at mile 7.4), or a relatively easy one by turning sharp right at this intersection and following Riverview Drive/Riverview Avenue. If the group splits on these options, we will re-group at the Observatory for the remainder of the ride. The harder option includes 0.5 miles at a grade of 8-9.5%; the easier option is a gradual climb of about 1 mile with average gradient about 3.5% (brief maximum 6%).
There are several options for socializing with food and drink just outside Highland Park at the end of the ride: e.g. Tazza D'Oro (coffee shop), Food Glorious Food (bakery), Park Bruge (ales and brunch), the Pub at the Park (nice outside deck).
12/Moderate/31.6. This is a No-Drop ride, and we will wait at turns. Riders are expected to maintain an average pace of 12 mph. This will be slower on climbs, faster on descents and flat sections without interruptions.
